We started small, we thought big.
We have been creating beautiful products for the home for over fifty years, blending iconic design and originality for people who enjoy life, and have fun doing it. We have moved with fashion and various trends through the years but always with the same philosophy: to make beautiful high quality products with timeless style.
We believe that cultivating creative thinking is imperative to our success. Whilst our feet are firmly planted in our British soil and soul, we still seek inspiration, joy and innovation from other countries and cultures.
Our talented crafts men and women have a real passion for creating unique and quality products making Portmeirion shine and stand the test of time. With this in mind, we design high quality tableware, cookware, giftware and tabletop accessories from our studio and factory in Stoke-on-Trent, England.
Where we started
“I’ve always wanted to have a pottery. My husband was slightly horrified at the idea at first. But we believe gaiety, brightness and good design are good business as well as good things in themselves.”Susan Williams-Ellis (1918 – 2007), co-founder of Portmeirion Pottery, 1960.
Susan and her husband, Euan Cooper-Willis, weren’t to know that they were about to start a business that would create iconic designs for the home and be adored worldwide.
Susan’s designs during the 1960s were innovative and ahead of their time. People wanted their tableware to harmonise with their kitchen and more casual lifestyles. Susan delivered designs like Greek Key, Magic Garden and Malachite which received great critical acclaim. Her tableware designs were unusually bright, with bold and abstract patterns coupled with striking cylindrical shapes and richly coloured transparent glaze, like the iconic Totem design (1963). Nothing like this had ever been seen before or so accurately captured the relaxed, informal and friendly mood of the times. Our reputation for bold, usable design was cemented.
Where we are
Creativity with discipline.
Following Susan’s example, today we continue to produce innovative designs that fit comfortably with everyday life. From Stoke-on-Trent, we proudly create award-winning collections such as Botanic Garden, Sophie Conran for Portmeirion and the Ted Baker Portmeirion range.
In our design studio we believe through creativity everything is possible. We have fun creating beautiful designs that add style and personality to people’s homes. Our talented craftsmen and women bustle with activity at our Stoke-on-Trent earthenware factory where we manufacture the majority of our ceramics. That’s about 170,000 pieces per week… and growing! We also work with some of the best porcelain and fine bone china factories in the world, benefiting from their expertise in these materials making sure we continually deliver high quality products for which Portmeirion is renowned.
We have expanded and now belong to Portmeirion Group which includes our sister brands Spode, Royal Worcester and Pimpernel. And we share the same commitment and philosophy: our products are synonymous with great British quality and will continue to be for many more generations to come.
